Consciousness is not our friend when it comes to performing roles that necessitate exhibiting and experiencing behaviour that is not part of who we have decided that we are, in real life. To be self-conscious is to be considering our position relative to the world outside the performance. It is fear of judgement or failure.

“Reality liberates us from the biases and misconceptions that have arisen because our intellects evolved through our animal ancestors, whose survival was based on whether predators might lurk behind trees or in caves and not on understanding the wave function of electrons in atoms.”
