Improvising and Devising: The Wardrobe Ensemble Process

We’ve devised and co-written 13 original shows over the past 7 and half years. Over these processes we’ve developed and distilled the ways in which we use improvisation.

In our early processes we often ran large scale and open group improvisations. But, often they weren’t an efficient way to generate new material. However, increasingly we have picked up certain exercises that give more time and space for what Improbable would refer to as the principles of Noticing, Believing and Supporting/giving expression to, to emerge.

For us, improvisation forms a very useful part of early process particularly. Where an audience might not enjoy the slower forms of improvisation exercises that we run in rehearsals, as devisors they’re particularly useful in generating new, unexpected and nuanced ideas from which tighter and more dramatic scenes might be developed within smaller groups.

In the workshop we will run three exercises and leave plenty of time to discuss their practical implications within our work. In doing so, we will be investigating -
1. The permission to improvise slowly.
2. The importance of the aware actor, audience and author.
3. The balance between performance exercise, discussion and creation.
4. Control, questions and answers.
5. Noticing character, narrative, theme and vibe.
6. The shifting emotional temperature of the room.
