Improvising Gender
A workshop about playing characters of different genders at the top of your intelligence. We'll look at the behavioural and expressive gesture of gender, and talk about what gender is, and how it affects both players and their characters. We'll also learn about playing trans and non-binary and have a go at some characters who are off-the-beaten-path. Gender is often discussed in today's society, with transgender rights being a particularly hot button issue. As improvisers we are well-equipped to challenge the construct of gender, and to break and re-make it with every character we create.
Instructor Stephen Davidson is transgender and has improvised as both a male and female performer. This workshop is a unique opportunity to explore the range of genders under the guidance of somebody with a broad range of experience. We'll also talk about inclusivity, and making sure women, men, transgender, and non-binary players feel welcome in class, in the audience, and on stage.
This workshop has an accompanying book, available at the Nursery Theatre and from impromiscuous.com
